I loved seeing the handmade things that clever people created, often knowing that they couldn't be found anywhere else.<br />
I loved buying bags of fresh produce, cutesy little kitsch that was a 'must' by then and there, and often little gifts and presents for loved ones that they couldn't find anywhere else.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbVi8RGaQANBOJttng6EHiKNMmoFCr1fVh757W92IjtgSFelsAk2lrijU5uVloCaCv-64yU2Romb080p6LrQCYSxddu1Ytf0UKUW09cnyR1avxeGYyGAJaFqRh9NG4oES4qqPkVGU_C9k/s1600/luciandjoe+6-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbVi8RGaQANBOJttng6EHiKNMmoFCr1fVh757W92IjtgSFelsAk2lrijU5uVloCaCv-64yU2Romb080p6LrQCYSxddu1Ytf0UKUW09cnyR1avxeGYyGAJaFqRh9NG4oES4qqPkVGU_C9k/s1600/luciandjoe+6-2.jpg" height="320" width="230" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now that I get to play on the other side of the stall table, I still love going to markets as a shopper and a maker.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Piccadilly market has at least 80 stalls each time - sometimes more - and whilst there are the old favourites and returners, there are always new things to see on their stands or with the brand new businesses who are represented.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The advantage of early set up and organisation, is that you get a chance to have a sneaky walk around and admire your neighbour's work. I try and go for a wander further afield before we open, as I'm often at a stand by myself and a quick trip to bathroom/coffee is all I want to do - there's never time for wandering and shopping unless I have relief stall assistance from someone! However, it's entirely a different matter when you find yourself admiring your neighbouring tables for hours at a time. It's quite easy to talk yourself into something that you have been admiring for hours... I may or may not have made some late afternoon impulse purchases from fellow stallholders that way ;)</div>

Today we held an open studio for some of the artists who are holding sessions at the Julia Street Creative Space. I was there alongside some incredibly talented people - Ruby Richardson (screen printing), Brett Jarrett (realist painter), Jenny Griffin (felt maker) and Shelley Husband/<a href="http://www.spincushions.com/" target="_blank">Spincushions </a>(crochet work).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was so busy that I only got a chance to take one quick photo to send to Shelley (who was unable to be there today), and then posted it nearly at the end of the actual time! Oh well, it's a testament to the event that I was so busy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
luciandjoe have scheduled two workshops for the coming months, and there are plans underway for more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first one is an introductory session which is designed to give people a taste of what book projects could be made. We'll be making a concertina book (A5 in size, beautiful paper covered hard book cover and at least 90cm wide paper (depending on how big the sheets are that I can order!). These are great for albums, guest books and folios.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also in that workshop we are making a simple sewn book, using card as a cover and a single signature, hand sewn into place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The idea of this workshop is to give you an idea of what skills are involved, and how you could make your own personalised version at home. All materials and tools are supplied, and places for this date are filling up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHxjtla2YKvTeB2aU0wAGI7wK7Gjn3iG4jHkW3aiASvcDSOyh5tBaIgCiXD_a5zyaUoBmzg64fgg9riJSAyuMvmohJbgRBAD_4ns9Bm7x3pCKLzF83ON2HCP12iGvKp1aeNqrsLbQHIQY/s1600/Beginners+poster+Apr14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHxjtla2YKvTeB2aU0wAGI7wK7Gjn3iG4jHkW3aiASvcDSOyh5tBaIgCiXD_a5zyaUoBmzg64fgg9riJSAyuMvmohJbgRBAD_4ns9Bm7x3pCKLzF83ON2HCP12iGvKp1aeNqrsLbQHIQY/s1600/Beginners+poster+Apr14.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the 21st June we've scheduled a fabric covered book workshop, which is to made a book as seen in the photo below. You start with a piece of fabric, a piece of beautiful paper, some card stock, artist paper and thread - and you finish with a multi-signature hand bound hard cover book. Voila!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioqYStRneaTt9XWt1R9GFvlBYAjvOfDFJzpcUVjAkpi4-dGxiqWfeUyfwzlu-3avTfmRxqdDZBbtrP1GXVBzgoPQsSLpsbn8jVSsQ5ItSqI7sALN_CkaPCm1v0v80TrX-jcNYJiuGfXAc/s1600/fabric+book+poster+Apr14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioqYStRneaTt9XWt1R9GFvlBYAjvOfDFJzpcUVjAkpi4-dGxiqWfeUyfwzlu-3avTfmRxqdDZBbtrP1GXVBzgoPQsSLpsbn8jVSsQ5ItSqI7sALN_CkaPCm1v0v80TrX-jcNYJiuGfXAc/s1600/fabric+book+poster+Apr14.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are interested in doing the workshops, drop into the Julia Street Creative Space (old Arts Company) in Julia Street Portland to sign up. They are taking names of anyone who can't make those dates - or please get in touch with me here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We are looking to do repeat workshops, as well as introduce some specialised projects with upcycled and artist books.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Exciting times ahead!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The trip covered so much of this gorgeous country that I am still processing it in my mind and trying to remember as much as possible. I was lucky enough to visit most of the big cities, and a lot of the small picturesque villages and towns in between.<br />

<br />
<br />
Here's the list that I can remember…<br />
Rome<br />
Sorrento<br />
Positano<br />
Capri<br />
Pompeii<br />
Assisi<br />
Classe<br />
Venice<br />
Verona<br />
Varese<br />
Milan<br />
all 3 big lakes: Garda, Como, Maggore<br />
Pisa<br />
Florence<br />
San Gimignano<br />
Siena<br />
I think that's all of them, but I can't wait to review my notes to double check.<br />
<br />
Now that I'm back home - and nearly in this home time zone - I'm looking forward to getting ready for this weekend's markets.<br />

In the past, I've spent a lot of time putting together a whole scene, usually on the dining table or nearby where the light is good. Of course that means set up, shooting and packing up and it becomes very tedious. Everything is stored at the other end of the house, I make a huge mess and it seems very much like hard work. The photos make it all worthwhile, but it's been two years since I set up a 'big shoot' and I needed something more immediate.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsECES-q11GO4Z6fQFQ_4lP0hqST5m45Ymhxs29Ywtxsc3Lii-G78_B5M4_BNPi_e_Mu3H6z1CXP8bdQU5mr2yqLOaXMABI_Hf8QUZQTOLrMwQ7d44-GOXm44NpT42zGD2gwBIVVqjAyQ/s1600/IMG_2213.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsECES-q11GO4Z6fQFQ_4lP0hqST5m45Ymhxs29Ywtxsc3Lii-G78_B5M4_BNPi_e_Mu3H6z1CXP8bdQU5mr2yqLOaXMABI_Hf8QUZQTOLrMwQ7d44-GOXm44NpT42zGD2gwBIVVqjAyQ/s320/IMG_2213.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I use shots like this for promo opportunities, such as supplying for markets </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>applications and social media use. It looks a little messier than I </i><i>would normally </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>like as the books all have their tags hanging from the</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i> - that's the light cotton you see on their spines.</i></div>
<br />
I've created a little scene on top of a dresser in the spare room, which has a store of jars with vintage sewing pieces in them, as well as some of my other sewing collection. I had wanted to put some form of backdrop behind it though, and browsed wallpaper samples and even a curtain. I settled on using a piece of Tilda fabric, padded and in a large frame that I've painted white. It just sits on top of the dressed, and whilst it's not always seen or even in focus, its purpose is to simply add another layer of colour and texture to the background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXH_VXWnO9GonmRkTGrzzHgZDDGX-xFoYadPGnPfPCt4WcdVUZMhzN9_ELGOk0bVjSQi32KiAgvAPwkgKt1ba5_KIV4V4wxLWbR5Kwp-gHp1beaN5FiYLuCVFHSigHUaNsfH18SJGKPxk/s1600/IMG_2112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXH_VXWnO9GonmRkTGrzzHgZDDGX-xFoYadPGnPfPCt4WcdVUZMhzN9_ELGOk0bVjSQi32KiAgvAPwkgKt1ba5_KIV4V4wxLWbR5Kwp-gHp1beaN5FiYLuCVFHSigHUaNsfH18SJGKPxk/s320/IMG_2112.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>The photo above gives you a sense of the scene I set up</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>(and I played around with lighting after this was taken, </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>and this will be cropped before being used).</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
The dresser is about chest high, so it's a perfect height for shooting and working with - even though I sometimes find that I hold the camera up very high for overhead shots!<br />
The fabric on top of the dresser is a quilted table runner that I bought from <i>Ici et la</i> in Sydney quite a number of years ago.<br />
The jar to the right holds some ric rac cards, lace and offcuts that were mainly from my nanna's old sewing boxes.<br />
To the left you can just see a smaller jar at the front, which holds vintage french cotton spools, and the larger jar behind it holds an assortment of vintage sewing notions. Some I had, some from my nanna, and I've purchased a couple of collections online.<br />
The back of this shot you can clearly see the white frame, as well as the fabric inside it which creates a background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSlSxANQOS8FVa47aeTArJ7IUKoxBlt7ASg46gw9FkAuXhBIcdLKnOHMTZlmwexjPsax9F2tOuytDciXXQQjnLtaANHcUzsX_xlV9HyxDP0M87SA0WJwL2w-H6HmDPGyskelTBhPt-fyE/s1600/IMG_2201.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSlSxANQOS8FVa47aeTArJ7IUKoxBlt7ASg46gw9FkAuXhBIcdLKnOHMTZlmwexjPsax9F2tOuytDciXXQQjnLtaANHcUzsX_xlV9HyxDP0M87SA0WJwL2w-H6HmDPGyskelTBhPt-fyE/s320/IMG_2201.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A different perspective - a book in the centre of the display being photographed, the trio of lights from my study which I moved to help with lighting today. None are directed at the scene itself to prevent shadowing, the diffused light above really helped to get rid of the shadows from the window too (which is to the far right of where this is, out of shot). The room's overhead light is also on.<br />
When summer moves a little closer, the light coming through the window is terrific, and no artificial light will be needed for a few hours each day.<br />
<br />
I had been using a tripod but the piece that connects the camera to the tripod is very dodgy, and I kept working it loose as I was moving the camera around too much. I gave up and went back to holding the camera.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim9nstHBDlFbduljIZ013uzeo_ZMcybV44r2HZIkyJAmFvm1giNm5R964pqxL4kUzJhPd3YMR8qfa-aDMP_Ohk6LLnr2LB4bB2n6WDGgNIgVlwXdYNGVHLgfOQRJr0rpIrwt_sFA54WkI/s1600/IMG_2227.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim9nstHBDlFbduljIZ013uzeo_ZMcybV44r2HZIkyJAmFvm1giNm5R964pqxL4kUzJhPd3YMR8qfa-aDMP_Ohk6LLnr2LB4bB2n6WDGgNIgVlwXdYNGVHLgfOQRJr0rpIrwt_sFA54WkI/s320/IMG_2227.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had dug out a lot of books which are normally just packed up between markets, so I took advantage of them being out and took a few other promo shots. This stamp is what I put on my products, and I took a few photos with my business card too in the same set up.</div>

Kicking off on Sunday is my first stall at the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheWarrnamboolAndDistrictMarket?hc_location=stream" target="_blank">Warrnambool & District Market</a>, which is usually held on the town green in the centre of Warrnambool city. For the Winter months of more chilled and unpredictable weather, they've moved indoors to the Wannon Rooms (Greyhound track). I'm excited to be joining the very talented stallholders - especially the delicious treats on offer!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the fun of Sunday, I next head over to Torquay for the inaugural <a href="https://www.facebook.com/surfcoastartdesign?fref=ts" target="_blank">Surf Coast Art & Design marke</a>t, which looks like it's going to be amazing. Stay tuned for news as that comes closer, as well as some sneaky peeks of some of my new products still on the production table.</div>

Earlier in the year I told you about a workshop that I did with <a href="http://www.learn2screenprint.com.au/" target="_blank">Learn2Screenprint</a> where we went through so much information and so many techniques that it was impossible to process it all at once.</span><br />
Yesterday I was able to do another workshop where we used the technique of photo emulsion and exposure, a technique that I was really keen to get my hands dirty with.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In its essence, photo emulsion is a paint-like medium that is put onto a screen, then overlaid with a design on acetate (you can see my dahlias above). The screen is kept in the dark, then when the design is in place, it's exposed to light to burn the black design onto the screen. The screen is then washed, and what you see in black is removed. The emulsion that was hit by the light is hardened and sets onto the screen. The black protects the emulsion behind it, and then is washed off. Voila, a very sharp image and potentially superfine designs are left on your screen, ready for inking and printing.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZOd2q4tkK4oLQ89Gwkt6_vCqp3OYepATCQCe3qgRndlfrVHpJoCQmzOpx0TtrpR-gCfZS71BhrkbgBVqj3YbGMH_KlWBymuzRGNhoVv6GVsypjsbP5tkWK5aoN2g8MuII6_f8maxdB-M/s1600/red+dahlia+test+print.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZOd2q4tkK4oLQ89Gwkt6_vCqp3OYepATCQCe3qgRndlfrVHpJoCQmzOpx0TtrpR-gCfZS71BhrkbgBVqj3YbGMH_KlWBymuzRGNhoVv6GVsypjsbP5tkWK5aoN2g8MuII6_f8maxdB-M/s320/red+dahlia+test+print.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the test print I did (all I had time to print yesterday unfortunately), but the photo shows how sharp and crisp that edge is, and how the design can come up. I'm excited by this type of screen production because of the results that you can print from it. I'm lucky enough to have access to a darkroom and therefore the exposure lights required to do this myself, but I can definitely see myself using the professional services of screenprinting companies to expose my designs onto screens as well. I have SO many designs and products running through my mind, just itching to jump onto the fabric.</div>

The <a href="http://www.thefinderskeepers.com/" target="_blank">Finders Keepers market</a> is held twice a year in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and it is a giant collection of artists, craftisans, designers and generally amazing people. I lost count of stalls, but there seemed like hundreds. Seriously!<br />
<br />
I had a strategy to try and see every stall in a logical manner - up one aisle, down another, not missing anything. I quickly abandoned that crazy idea when I discovered that it was not only set out in a way that fits the space (how inconvenient!), but I didn't want to just walk past things once. I may not have done a full couple of laps, but I did try :)<br />
<br />
The market was held at the Royal Exhibition Building, which is an incredibly impressive building on the edge of the city. It's high ceilings and ornate decoration set a pretty artistic mood, and from both a stallholder's and a shopper's point of view, very well spaced so that it wasn't difficult to move around and see what you wanted to.<br />
<br />
Here's a bit of a peek through my shopping bag,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Above and below is <a href="http://www.blankgoods.com.au/" target="_blank">Blank Goods</a>, where I bought a couple of supplies for myself. It was hard to not just buy things to make things, rather than things that other people have already made!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The cute earrings below were (surprisingly!) my only jewellery purchase - for myself anyway! I bought a couple of pressies which I'm not showing, but there were so very gorgeous pieces in a lot of stalls. I did take a few cards to follow up later... This little pair of red earrings from <a href="http://www.thatvintage.com.au/" target="_blank">That Vintage</a> will be worn often I'm sure.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There were quite a few very talented screen printers at the market, and the one that tempted me (for now anyway!), was <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tinker-by-printink-studio/459949510705032" target="_blank">Tinker</a>. I chose a table runner in flax-coloured linen, with a colour palette that I love. It was very lucky that they I restrained myself here.</div>

<br />
I've long admired <a href="http://www.mazeandvale.com/" target="_blank">Maze & Vale</a> and was very happy to discover that they had a stall on Saturday. I chose (after long deliberations) three pieces of their prints on linen.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am a scarf gal, and my new rule is that I can buy myself a new one for each Winter. Just one. This one is made from bamboo, and is a bright pink dahlia print on a light grey background. Perfect.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Again, some evidence of things to make with rather than pre-made, but I love Indian wooden blocks and this kit came with three beautiful paisley ones. It was purchased from <a href="http://www.earthtribe.com.au/" target="_blank">earth tribe</a>, which proclaims fair trade ethics - this means that I could have quite happily have justified in purchasing more! Next time.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So that's a snapshot of my visit, but only a very small part of it. I HIGHLY recommend this market for anyone who loves good quality, handmade products. But allow a good couple of hours to get through it all at least once.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was also able to do a quick side-trip and took in the always excellent Top Arts 2013 exhibition at the NGV Ian Potter centre, Federation Square. There I was able to pay homage to a very familiar piece by a gorgeous girl, <a href="http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/learn/top-arts-hub/2013/students/shannon-malseed" target="_blank">Shannon Malseed</a>. Go and check it out.</div>

I recently went along to an artist's talk, followed by a mini workshop by the talented textile artist, <a href="http://www.karenrichards.net/" target="_blank">Karen Richards</a>. She spoke about her work and the 'phases' that she's been going through over the many years that she's been working with thread. It was incredibly interesting, especially her innovative work with reflective thread and the installation that is now travelling throughout Australia.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The mini workshop after the talk was (in my opinion) about her encouraging us to play with threads, designs and to see where the traditional approaches can be stretched and manipulated. Now, that is right up my alley! It didn't suit some of the more traditional stitchers who were there, but I haven't done any formal embroidery since I was a teenager many (many) moons ago, so perhaps I was less restricted by the need to keep stitches tight and consistent. I started remembering a few traditional traits, especially the need to have the back as neat as the front - who does that!! - but I was more than happy to just muck around and have some fun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So bring on Easter, a raid of my own supplies and a little shopping, and I've settled in to lose myself in my latest little obsession.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one was my first attempt at playing with stitches, and seeing how to fill in spaces using layering (which was an emphasis in Karen's work). The instagram filter has made it much more orange in colour, but I liked the layering. I was also very happy to teach myself how to french knot via youtube, and whilst the first one wasn't so great, the rest have been fairly consistent since then.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_21A9kKzl03yA9P5KaQlYVPFRFBA7I6ccGkqqk4bSHF1yGZbUwYRQZlLU2fxz07JFYQLXrqTGWaks7nUud4AEpywm7-qsqZvQQRnXHWE_oBZzS5Dgd9nTwLmsuuxJhAscxzXHJ3BRhU/s1600/pink+flowers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_21A9kKzl03yA9P5KaQlYVPFRFBA7I6ccGkqqk4bSHF1yGZbUwYRQZlLU2fxz07JFYQLXrqTGWaks7nUud4AEpywm7-qsqZvQQRnXHWE_oBZzS5Dgd9nTwLmsuuxJhAscxzXHJ3BRhU/s320/pink+flowers.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was one I finished today, using a purchased pattern and transfer (SO much easier than any other method). I have a whole series of these little owls, and I'm using a little 4" frame to stitch them, so I think that I'll make some up into a little coaster set.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCwEd-IyJgQF9eaI7I0l4aDqyZcuEDkoWz2CQmf-WgcIoqm00KRmoO9gXMQFiLP8_nIPO7nW0S29tRICHl_fwBjD7cBB9gtTIHxhcixxbEepjehmoGGjjk3yt8iFhk6XKZHRO83c6s-k8/s1600/pink+owl+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCwEd-IyJgQF9eaI7I0l4aDqyZcuEDkoWz2CQmf-WgcIoqm00KRmoO9gXMQFiLP8_nIPO7nW0S29tRICHl_fwBjD7cBB9gtTIHxhcixxbEepjehmoGGjjk3yt8iFhk6XKZHRO83c6s-k8/s320/pink+owl+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This blue one was the second one I did, and I started it on Saturday at the Port Fairy market. I'm enjoying the portability of this new craft/obsession/use of my time and can see it being the thing that I cart around with me to more markets and trips.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought some downloadable pdf patterns from a gorgeous etsy store, <a href="http://www.polkaandbloom.com/" target="_blank">Polka and Bloom</a>, which is based in the UK. I have completed one of the designs already but haven't uploaded the photo yet. I'm really looking forward to doing more of those projects though - complex, lots of colour possibilities and a bit of a challenge.</div>

I literally hit the mother load with the photo below. I knew that Mum would still have a lot of things in her cupboards, and after I couple of requests, I lobbed over there on the weekend and found a whole boxful of old transfers in the first box we opened. There were some in an envelope dated 1947, some with my Grandmother's maiden name, others from New Idea inserts from the 1970s. There are a lot of great vintage designs that I intend to play with, and whilst some of them have transfer ink that have bled a bit, they look like they might still be tranferrable.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also 'borrowed' her box of threads too...</div>

There were some new faces, and some exciting new work from some familiar faces. I always find markets to be so inspiring and motivating - what can I create next? how will this idea work? I wonder whether... I have a notebook that I take with me each time, and it's filled with ideas and observations of things that I notice throughout the day. The key is then going back to it and then making the time - but that's for another day!<br />

This was the market that got me into the whole market gig and convinced me that it was actually possible to load the car up for a weekend away, set up shop, meet lots of link-minded stallholders and customers alike, and come home feeling hugely inspired and motivated.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>The first market, back in April 2011</i></div>
<br />
<br />
I missed the original advertisement, but a friend put me onto the call out for stallholders and in that first year, I went to all four of their seasonally themed markets. We're located in a small Church hall, just off one of the busy main streets. Port Fairy is a tourist haven and is very busy each weekend, but especially so when one of their regular festivals are on.<br />
<br />
The market is focused on the promotion of local artists and makers, so last year when I successfully applied for two events, and got the call in for a third, I was especially proud of my involvement in the 'local scene'.<br />

This time around we'll be celebrating what everyone has achieved over the last two years and look forward to future opportunities for us all. I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces again, saying thank you and importantly - staying connected in many of the wonderful ways that make a craftisan feel like it's not such an isolated life after all.<br />
<br />
Thanks MADE market - it's been a brilliant couple of years :)<br />

<br />
I recently did a screen printing course with Laura from <a href="http://www.learn2screenprint.com.au/" target="_blank">Learn2ScreenPrint</a>. I'll post some of my adventures in this new and exciting medium in coming weeks, but needless to say as usual I have another million ideas churning around in my mind about how to play with the possibilities of screens and inks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNgS3Sv_pcCskAk72iDMHFGY0Utb_HHa4zxxUVGErwigliKZ6cCdmxTf9xAKifqnwCF_M2X4Kn4Q4HPG42at_DJU3MqSNtszzpWCHljyplxml_ikIBMDX0RDcK1H54AD1xGmUeB9jyXVU/s1600/clothesline+from+course.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNgS3Sv_pcCskAk72iDMHFGY0Utb_HHa4zxxUVGErwigliKZ6cCdmxTf9xAKifqnwCF_M2X4Kn4Q4HPG42at_DJU3MqSNtszzpWCHljyplxml_ikIBMDX0RDcK1H54AD1xGmUeB9jyXVU/s320/clothesline+from+course.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>but am happier with the final result than I thought I would be.</i></div>
<br />
<br />
I'm also currently happily undertaking the decor8 <a href="http://www.decor8eclasses.com/" target="_blank">Blogging Your Way</a> online course this month.<br />
There are so many inspiring people participating and I'm looking forward to sitting down with a (big) cup of coffee and having a look at the blogs of others classmates.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg91LvJUchoDkkakqybH0rtrAy8vlSr7VVhyCEAqHCO_OvHiaufdK-4Tg6qM7zjI5iJpQImBel-s5_8lK-pEz_ijy4LCbbD1oG3cXVsYeGVGz_JR1sfvAaODLNbOQSkvZ1FnruZ20L5WhI/s1600/student+button.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg91LvJUchoDkkakqybH0rtrAy8vlSr7VVhyCEAqHCO_OvHiaufdK-4Tg6qM7zjI5iJpQImBel-s5_8lK-pEz_ijy4LCbbD1oG3cXVsYeGVGz_JR1sfvAaODLNbOQSkvZ1FnruZ20L5WhI/s1600/student+button.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have found that working my way through these online courses is such an easy and enjoyable way to end up with a great range of advantages - connections with people all around the world, which is the beauty of blogs; learning some new skills and new insights; and actually taking the time to reflect and plan my own work - with is truly a rarity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's see what comes from these adventures in weeks to come.</div>
<br />Joe Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03505305259642946259noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7061585100511123629.post-81152208501843108102013-01-18T16:42:00.001+11:002013-01-18T16:42:30.376+11:00finding some inspirationI'm finding that this time of the year is the time of the year that I am actively seeking out some inspiration and in that, some motivation. Maybe it's the charge ahead for a new year or that feeling of clearing out the old, in with the new. Whatever it is, I've been busy reading about what some other people get up to to formulate some new designs and structure into their processes.<br />
<br />
I've been a fan of <a href="http://www.aliedwards.com/" target="_blank">Ali Edwards</a> for a long time now, and if you're not familiar with her or her work, she's a graphic designer who has a clean and simple approach to her work. She does a lot of paper work and posts regularly about the projects that she's been doing, both personal and for her business.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRqboxwLA0LZRB5oKJXQf75_vp7-MJzRanBuBjirV84FZTPo60xveSPhB-LXbeMBscgjT2zz3aJqs5R_4LRAdLdW4lKocaIs1vt4gAnVGH8f7F3rk6iyKqRUaOUQIcyqECI8tqHPd5gW4/s1600/AE_OLW2013_openimage-500x333.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRqboxwLA0LZRB5oKJXQf75_vp7-MJzRanBuBjirV84FZTPo60xveSPhB-LXbeMBscgjT2zz3aJqs5R_4LRAdLdW4lKocaIs1vt4gAnVGH8f7F3rk6iyKqRUaOUQIcyqECI8tqHPd5gW4/s320/AE_OLW2013_openimage-500x333.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I decided again to sign up for her <a href="http://www.bigpictureclasses.com/onelittleword2013.php" target="_blank">One Little Word</a> year-long workshop again, to remind myself of a regular project and the reflectiveness that this project can provide. Hopefully it'll also inject a bit of my word back into my day-to-day in the year thirteen.<br />
<br />
I also went back and went through the blogging course from elsie & laura at <a href="http://www.abeautifulmess.com/" target="_blank">a beautiful mess</a>, which I first mentioned in a <a href="http://luciandjoe.blogspot.com.au/2012/04/blogs-i-love.html" target="_blank">post last year</a> about blogs I was (and still am) reading. In their blogging ecourse, I like their mix of personal experiences and guidelines. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoQm0b4p90rPnYZdsaN7KIQxHOlRese1F80NWw1LKqJ5WeMWT0QPZ8g2F64qfPXn2ufnojOUixosVkGKgC-8q6XY6mNENHx4OjWFj3K7WOEpA2cD9pBRPsiQUl4g0bdkJU9wxXUqtvGL0/s1600/student_button.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoQm0b4p90rPnYZdsaN7KIQxHOlRese1F80NWw1LKqJ5WeMWT0QPZ8g2F64qfPXn2ufnojOUixosVkGKgC-8q6XY6mNENHx4OjWFj3K7WOEpA2cD9pBRPsiQUl4g0bdkJU9wxXUqtvGL0/s1600/student_button.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Whilst they proclaim throughout to be no experts (which I think there a lot of us who would decry that they are!), it is refreshing to read about what they find interesting and how they manage their own time. I am a planner and organiser, but my own ideals don't always flow through to everything that I want them to - I don't post regularly, I don't have a lot of planned or scheduled posts, I don't take enough nor share enough photos, I don't... I don't... I am trying to be easier on myself with running a craft business and having an online presence, so I think that reading through these courses and articles help to both re-inspire and to remember that it's okay that I don't do all of that!Joe Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03505305259642946259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7061585100511123629.post-55446131652300606452013-01-02T18:17:00.005+11:002013-01-02T18:17:55.631+11:00january 2013I have many reasons to love january: the long holidays, beautiful summer weather, sleeping in, tennis on tv (and in person), the beach, iced coffee, driving with the windows down, freedom and TIME.<br />
I get into the habit every year of making a "holiday" list. It's not usually a physical list of jobs or words, but it's certainly a physical presence. There are piles of things to sort, tackle, fix and start all throughout the house that are labelled "holidays". At the beginning of these big holidays, I usually am too tired to really deal with much of it. There's a quick cleaning frenzy and then I'm content to look at things for a few days and ignore them. Three days ago I got my mojo back and started into them all.<br />
<br />
The types of things that I leave can be as mundane as sorting paper into the filing cabinet and re-arranging piles in the spare room, but also excitingly, things that are more fulfilling in the creative sense.<br />
<br />
I started making new cards which is a great process. I am making more of some popular designs which sold out at recent markets, but I'm also making a lot of new ones. I've got a collection of amazing old prints and photographs from encylopaedias and novels which are being made into absolute one-off cards.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnJKKwFTSjgrfeYdGg6jeAkUV6ilcZL_1nEBEKKbmibc08g2ZD-n8JLt_ohSnmGKvK-dYskBJ59gH_L45UGyPC6_u6hdV5551X6USyyvf5r0Yc6qOPkuNMGJlJwrdFVi1bz3n1-fdqjQY/s1600/IMG_1863.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnJKKwFTSjgrfeYdGg6jeAkUV6ilcZL_1nEBEKKbmibc08g2ZD-n8JLt_ohSnmGKvK-dYskBJ59gH_L45UGyPC6_u6hdV5551X6USyyvf5r0Yc6qOPkuNMGJlJwrdFVi1bz3n1-fdqjQY/s320/IMG_1863.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Here you can see little piles of cards in various stages.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>At the back is a tray filled with cover pieces ready to be put together.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Front left is an example of a vintage illustration, and next to it is an example of some of the popular phrase cards that also use some vintage book paper.</i></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8gnaKd7iqyrJVvk-l2cFEUofULuRMxBPkZhd4IO2Qaj2Dp-3vHOr3IcCLi9PSiaTtkTppDMpgMXH_dsxeV6Z0XRxcszy7rKYTsFxvCsrdER4jVi0VYCkpHSbEe0q8wXBCvYjynYtbakA/s1600/IMG_1865.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8gnaKd7iqyrJVvk-l2cFEUofULuRMxBPkZhd4IO2Qaj2Dp-3vHOr3IcCLi9PSiaTtkTppDMpgMXH_dsxeV6Z0XRxcszy7rKYTsFxvCsrdER4jVi0VYCkpHSbEe0q8wXBCvYjynYtbakA/s320/IMG_1865.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>I love sewing paper together as it gives it another texture and design element.</i></div>
<br />
One of the january jobs that I enjoy is trying to plan out the year ahead.<br />
I have work and personal commitments that influence those plans, but as the market dates are announced I put those into the year's schedule, as well as their application opening dates. I try and spread markets out throughout the year, but a lot of market organisers seem to share the same ideas and there can often be a glut! I have to travel between 75kms and 300kms to attend markets, so it's not something that I can easily do as many weekends as I would like.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg58SrSKyiwlYsZ035oQTQWixwKLCUEJDpHK7LK6-lrTr138rtmNxJSRcYdCx126-wJXJ-y0keUZCiuFhqRxQ6MKhV8p88HPiOsTf6XR1jVc-HMduiuGTmpMtuqxrZQwxDj-SA4AbTFPQY/s1600/IMG_1870.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg58SrSKyiwlYsZ035oQTQWixwKLCUEJDpHK7LK6-lrTr138rtmNxJSRcYdCx126-wJXJ-y0keUZCiuFhqRxQ6MKhV8p88HPiOsTf6XR1jVc-HMduiuGTmpMtuqxrZQwxDj-SA4AbTFPQY/s320/IMG_1870.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
And I also discovered a little while ago that the website I had started to build in 2012 was shut down.<br />
How did that happen???<br />
Well, I have to take a lot of the blame for that - I hadn't done <i>any</i> work on it in a long time, I hadn't even checked it for a long time. I didn't realise that I was on a limited renewal (not automatic like I requested) and therefore it just ceased to exist.<br />
Now I'm in two minds and whilst I have spent time and money learning how to develop an independent website, I'm clearly not in a position to be able to update and maintain it as should be required. So it's a loss and a lesson, but I'm happy to spend more time here in blogpost instead. So hopefully you've noticed a slight change here. I'll keep tweaking as I find how to do more things, but my main focus will be the content itself, because that's what everyone loves most on a blog (well I do anyway!).Joe Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03505305259642946259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7061585100511123629.post-58967770314821493332012-12-26T17:53:00.001+11:002012-12-26T17:53:01.956+11:00clearing out for a fresh beginningI am super excited to have some time in January to be able to devote to luciandjoe bookbinding.<br />
What that means is that I have a chance to go through all the ideas that I've stored away, mostly on <a href="http://pinterest.com/joelogan/" target="_blank">pinterest</a>, and make some prototypes and see what I will put into the shop and market stand during 2013.<br />
<br />
I've got a few things in mind and am very keen to explore a few new designs and products themselves. I like to trial a few ways of making things, which inevitably means a trail of half-finished or abandoned ideas as I go. If something is too tricky or too time consuming it doesn't auotmatically mean it's discarded. I'm all about the final product - if it looks as best as it can be, then the tricky factor or time allowed isn't really a consideration. Which is probably why I will never be a big corporate business mogel!!<br />
<br />
Some sneaky hints at things to come include some glorious thick felt, more sewing lines and fixtures, as well some pretty cool new ways of highlighting the gorgeous vintage book pages which are a prominent feature in what we do. Keep an eye out for some sneaky peeks and requests for feedback!<br />
<br />
Until then, I'd like to clear out some shop stock and make room for some new products.<br />
Head on over to <a href="http://www.luciandjoe.etsy.com/" target="_blank">our etsy shop</a> to pick up a bargain - some of the books are HALF PRICE...<br />

<br />
The first one was for comments left on the blog in that competition time, and I'm looking forward to passing this prize pack onto <span style="color: #0b5394;">Bron</span> for her comment about cards at Christmas time.<br />
<br />
Secondly, another pack was for anyone who 'liked' <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LuciandjoeBookbinding" target="_blank">luciandjoe on Facebook</a>, and that was a little more time-consuming in that I had to write down everyone's name, assign them a number and hit the generator's button... of all of the people in that draw, I'm pleased to now get in touch with <span style="color: #0b5394;">Lauren</span> so that I can arrange to get her pack to her.<br />
<br />
Thanks to everyone for their support.<br />
In the days since my final market for the year, I've been plotting and planning and scheming my 2013 plans. I am going to use the period between Christmas and Australia Day to get stuck into some new ideas that I've been tossing around in my mind for a while now. My market schedule is still up in the air at the moment as I wait for some dates to be announced, so it's a good time to look at online strategies and more opportunities in general. One of my first points of call will be to go back to <a href="http://pinterest.com/joelogan/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a> and go through the hundreds of inspiring ideas that I've saved for later. It's a great way of refreshing your thinking and of course, of feeling creative and productive without leaving your laptop ;)<br />
Lots of exciting opportunities ahead.Joe Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03505305259642946259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7061585100511123629.post-11914177902131318682012-12-10T21:01:00.001+11:002012-12-10T21:01:07.066+11:00Xmas Bunting clearout<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;">'Merry Xmas' Bunting clearout - now all $20.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;">I have <strike>a dozen</strike> ten bunting packs left from this year's markets and am keen to see them hanging in homes this season.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;">Each one was originally priced at $30, but are now down to $20.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; text-align: left;">Please contact via email or leave a comment if you'd like to purchase one - I can list it on etsy, d</span><br />

Perhaps an hour whilst your phone went flat? Or two hours when you were inside a cinema? How about a long weekend away when you promised yourself that you wouldn't check email?<br />
Well, how about a whole week?<br />
<br />
It certainly makes a difference when the choice is not yours too. A fire in the region's telco exchange essentially shut the whole region down. I had one day without any mobile services, about 3 days with patchy 3G coverage, a few more without a landline, and a week without ADSL internet. <i>I was certainly not one of the worst affected, and I was so lucky to have other options available to me</i>, but it really affected my week. I was frustrated that I couldn't just jump online to check things like I was used to, and I felt completely hog-tied when I couldn't properly check and respond to emails either. This was especially frustrating for work, but only mildly worried about 'my' connections and access. First-world problem I know, but it was certainly an eye-opener.<br />
<br />
So the wrap up for this week of shut down is that now I'm back online I have about 10 safari tabs open, a hundred things to follow up, lots of great feedback and conversations to follow up and a frenzied effort to remind everyone about this coming Saturday's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mademarket?fref=ts" target="_blank">MADE Artists' market</a> in Port Fairy. More about that in an upcoming post... exciting specials and one-off bargains are guaranteed.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #6fa8dc;">A bonus for readers in cyberland is also that I'm extending my giveaway!</span><br />
I wasn't able to get online and put a few reminders out, so I'm closing it midnight on Monday 10th December now. That's a whole extra ten days to click like for us on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/luciandjoebookbinding" target="_blank">facebook</a>, or leave a comment on the <a href="http://luciandjoe.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/giveaway-time.html" target="_blank">giveaway blog post</a> - or really, any post since then if you prefer.<br />
So if you'd like to be in the running for one or both of the prize packs, follow your links above.<br />
<br />
Also, I've opened some messages today to let me know of our inclusion in some esty Treasury Lists.<br />
An inspiring list entitled 'Bon Voyage' just makes me want to pack my bags now. This list was featured on a blog post by <a href="http://thechillydog.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/fun-find-friday_30.html" target="_blank">The Chilly Dog</a>.<br />

<br />
Phew, that's it for now. I had a few things to say since I've been quiet offline for a few days!<br />

When I get to bring a friend/slave along it's a bonus, but I usually have to prepare and execute myself, which brings up challenges of transport and logistics.<br /><br />Firstly, I downsized my car this year. Oops. Fitting my market gear into my new boot has meant a rethink of my packing habits and really gotten me to just take less stuff. Or rather, fit the same stuff into fewer boxes. I use vintage suitcases in my displays so they're all full of products now - they have to earn their place in the boot!<br />All other items have to fit into one plastic lidded tub: other display boxes, cloths, cards.<br />I have a smaller tub which is my kit: business cards, receipt and record books, pins, tape, scissors, stickers, pens, tags and labels, snacks and a mag or two for the quiet times.<br />My purchase bags are out of a big box and into a smaller bag that fits down the side.<br />I have a new display board too, but that's in behind the passenger seat (you'll see photos of that on Sunday).<br />And lastly there's my chair (needed for some markets, and comfy!), and my super super important fold-down trolley. That thing was my best investment; I can get everything from the car to the site in two trips. That's important when distance and access and parking are often not ideal.<br /><br />On the day, I like to allow 45mins to set up.<br />That allows for all sorts of mind-changing, but also coffee buying in the time between set up and door opening.<br /><br />At the end of the market, I am gone in 15 minutes. Super fast pack up, which is great when I need to hit the road.<br /><br />There are a lot of things that you learn along the way, but plenty of resources to learn from those who do markets a lot more often than I do.<br /><br /><br />- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad<br />Joe Loganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03505305259642946259noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7061585100511123629.post-25717719590448157812012-11-22T17:59:00.001+11:002012-11-22T20:27:48.628+11:00No Internet!<br />

I have the sewing machine out:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN5IaBrdGpjHbIXFDWbSgx4bIC9QkGhWA6g_NwVPyVMhOh0zrm_NHpwcxqH2-nosQzgF6hG9EqaWaFwAklBNjkFfw2l4Bv-EJW63b8jcgG6MKW8y7YHG22URrpHlE9TfH4wr8QIiCMKnw/s1600/IMG_1856.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN5IaBrdGpjHbIXFDWbSgx4bIC9QkGhWA6g_NwVPyVMhOh0zrm_NHpwcxqH2-nosQzgF6hG9EqaWaFwAklBNjkFfw2l4Bv-EJW63b8jcgG6MKW8y7YHG22URrpHlE9TfH4wr8QIiCMKnw/s320/IMG_1856.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I discovered that I had somehow forgotten to print any 'X' pages, which is an oversight for my 'Merry Xmas' bunting sets that couldn't be ignored. So I set up the printing and got that done first.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm a speedy sewer, so I like to have the pieces in piles ready to sew in order so that they can all zip through the machine as it whirs along. Which sometimes means that when the bobbin runs empty, I might not realise until I get to the end - oh well!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I set up the photo above it was like the pages were zipping through as I snapped.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGe1rr8BbL_uS6ZpEftM47wdBjJDgB4SJiXIPo9Np8WxsVbFOulfS4ch7-J0jzhUHs52VfwpR9kixTrDkPOhyphenhyphenKshAsoiso5qZ3G4emoMsXjiRSqgikRNeURpdAC3PbKHsQBmGQ5dg1GdY/s1600/IMG_1859.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGe1rr8BbL_uS6ZpEftM47wdBjJDgB4SJiXIPo9Np8WxsVbFOulfS4ch7-J0jzhUHs52VfwpR9kixTrDkPOhyphenhyphenKshAsoiso5qZ3G4emoMsXjiRSqgikRNeURpdAC3PbKHsQBmGQ5dg1GdY/s320/IMG_1859.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found a spool of this wide red grosgrain ribbon which has turned out really nicely on these pages too. I like the red ribbon combination, but not everyone uses red in their Christmas colour scheme, so the black ribbon can be just as popular.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The zoomed in version of the photo above showed be (with some horror) how dusty and in dire need of a good clean the machine is. It reminded me to enquire about whether servicing is available next month, or whether I'll need to do my own version.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After sewing up all of these bunting sets, my next stage is to knot and end the threads, trim the ribbon and then package them up. More things ready for Sunday :)</div>
